Metamorphosis Hat

(a Free Download)

Tunisian Crochet hat designed for knitters who want to try something new.
You don't have to know how to crochet to make this fun hat. The pattern is written for knitters. You'll soon fall in love with this fiber technique that is a cross between knitting and crochet and results in a fabric that doesn't look like either. You can read more about it

Once you're proficient at Tunisian Crochet you'll be able to finish the hat in about 2 hours! It is my emergency gift project.
Here's a yarn tip: If you pick a brim color to compliment multiple colorways of the Mochi, you can knit three or four hat brims from that one ball.

  • Skills
The hat is worked flat in Tunisian Crochet and seamed up the back. The brim is picked up and knit in a 1x1 or 2x1 rib in the round. Don't know how to Tunisian Crochet? Don't worry ... we've included detailed step-by-step photo instructions to get you started. Warning … once you start it's addictive.
  • Gauge/Yarn
We think the best yarn for this hat is Cascade Mochi Chunky due to its long color changes. Pair that with any merino or blend with a gauge of 4.0 to 4.5 stitches per inch. We've used Karabella Aurora 8 and Berroco Pure Merino. Check you stash for partial balls or use our yarn tip above since I promise you, once you've made one you'll be making more!

You'll need one ball of main yarn (50 yards) and about 20 yards of contrasting color for the brim (and to extend size of larger hats). Works out to about 2.5 sts per 1".
  • Difficulty
This project is good for intermediate knitters who like to try new things. Tunisian Knitting makes a great first craft project for non-knitters but we would recommend a scarf to start with. If you want to make a scarf, download our free Tunisian Pillow pattern and just modify the width. There is more information about striping options in that pattern.
  • Sizes
Hat sizes include small, medium and large. Once you knit one you'll be able to play with the sizes.
  • Notions
